and i turned around to face you

it felt impossible, that it was finally over. a decade was a blink of an eye to immortal beings, but zeus wasn't long into his unending life and it felt like most of it had been fighting. and it was his fight, one he'd brought others into to join the overthrow of cronus and the titans, the uprising of the gods against them. his father didn't deserve to be the king of the cosmos, a coward who ate his children for fear one would take over. well, his hubris was part of his downfall. as was rhea, the titan who made it possible for the gods to uprise.

cronus was trapped in tartarus, where he would remain for eternity. zeus felt comfort in that, even as he stood on mount olympus, the place they'd been fighting from for so long. it was no longer a base for their battles but simply their home. the shift was palpable, the relief felt with the banishment of the enemies to tartarus and guarded by the hundred-handers who helped defeat them in the first place. it was peace, quiet — he knew it wouldn't last, but for the moment he could enjoy existing in it.

for the first time in his life he was able to be still. not training for a fight, as he had all his life leading up to the battle, or fighting what seemed an unending war. he knew his siblings, those who had been trapped inside their father until he was forced to release them. he had hera, a goddess who fought by his side initially for revenge but over time for much more. she was the embodiment of fire, burning hot and raging on beautifully, passionately, a wildness in her eyes and spirit that drew him in like a moth.

hera once asked him if he would visit her back on samos once the war was over. she talked about looking up at the stars in the sky and remembering that moment years in the future, when they were strangers. it hadn't been the time, but even then he knew — they would never be strangers. he couldn't imagine his life without her in it, the one person he felt saw him for who he truly was, as he saw her. she was his queen, and by this time the next day she would be so officially. one more night apart, the wedding, then forever.
